What Sparked My Love for Reading?

While I can't pinpoint an exact book that ignited my passion for reading, I believe Dr. Seuss played a significant role. My childhood library was filled with Dr. Seuss classics, from "Cat in the Hat" to "Red Fish Blue Fish." As I got a little older, I graduated to mystery and adventure books, like Goosebumps and Animorphs during my middle school years.

My love for reading led me to spend countless hours at my local library. I was such a regular that the librarians even let me help put away books and join in on activities. To me, it was pure magic - the way words could transport me to different worlds. Even now, every time I crack open a new book, I still feel that magic.

Keeping the Love for Books Alive

My love for books hasn't waned with age. Now, as a parent, I have the joy of nurturing a love for reading in my little one. I firmly believe that anyone can enjoy reading; you just need to find the right book. Whether it's romance, mystery, short stories, or graphic novels, the goal is to read and enjoy the journey it takes you on.

In our home, my little one has a library brimming with all sorts of books. We read together regularly, with bedtime stories being my favorite. He chooses the book and helps with turning the pages. Depending on his energy level, I may get him more involved by asking him to make animal sounds or describe the pictures. It's our special time, and it's something I look forward to at the end of each day. Some of our favorites include "Goodnight Moon" by Margaret Wise Brown, "How Do You Say I Love You?" by Hannah Eliot, and "Press Here" by Hervé Tullet.

No matter what you do or what you read, have fun and enjoy the journey with your loved ones.

Looking for ways to celebrate the month?

  1. Visit Your Local Library: If you don't have a library card, you're missing out. Get one and download Libby for a world of literary treasures. You'll thank me later.

  2. Pick Up a Book: Start reading that book you've had on your to-be-read (TBR) list. You could even buy a second copy and share it with a family member so you now have a reading buddy.

  3. Donate: If you have books collecting dust, consider passing them on to give someone else the chance to discover their next great read.

To make your celebration even more special, I'm sharing a printable of DIY bookmarks that allow you to decorate with your unique style and track your book progress as you read. To access the printable library, subscribe to our community and get the password.

On my own TBR list is "Daughter of the Moon Goddess" by Sue Lynn Tan. What's on your reading list? Share your literary gems in the comments below.
